May is (FREE) Live Music Month!

Well... May is not exactly "free" with regards to live music (i.e. REM, the Cure, the breeders, Ladytron and on and on...) , but there has been an exceptionally exorbitant number of free music-related events for the frugally-minded (sometimes) like me.

Case in point:
Indie 103.1 is back with an amazing lineup for Monday Check One... Two at the Viper Room. Since missing last Monday's also-amazing lineup (I Make This Sound / Rademacher / Henry Clay People / Ride on Rides) must've felt awful, I'm sure you'll be fingertapping the following event into your iPhone iCal for Monday, May 12th:
Monday’s 103.1 Check One...Two at Viper Room
May, 12 2008
Lineup:
Cost : FREE  w/Rsvp (send message here)

set times are as follows:
12:00 The Savages
11:00 Film School
10:00 Everest
9:00 Castaneda

Please research the psychedelic greatness of Film School via myspace or another web portal of your choice.  Enjoy the aural pleasures.

I cannot imagine foreseeing a need, but if you require additional convincing after distance learning Film School, check out this recent live review of the band (via Buzznet).

Summertime at Hollywood Bowl: Presale NOW

Advance-Fun Alert:
Open up those calendars on your iPhone... There's still time to score on some prime presale seats for the upcoming Hollywood Bowl season. This year's lineup of talent is out of control! Some of this summer's artists include R.E.M. (with the National and Modest Mouse), Beck (w/ Spoon and MGMT), Feist (w/Sharon and the Dap Kings), The Album Leaf and Gnarls Barkley, Thievery Corporation and, of course, RADIOHEAD!!!

Now in its ninth year, KCRW’s World Festival brings acts from around the globe to Los Angeles and offers a unique experience for people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.

You'll have to find a scalper (or a really nice and special friend) if you'd like to see Thom Yorke and co., but the other Bowl shows should be worth a presale perusal.

Tickets for both the series and single show tickets are on sale now! The Presale Password: BOWL. Presale ends May 10th at 9am, at which point the Official onsale begins. Good tunes. Good Peeps. If you want it, you can have it (before everyone else, too). Get thee to the checkout soon!

Hollywood Bowl Presale, May 5 @ 10 a.m. to May 10 @ 9 a.m.

Wednesday FREE Load: 120 Days and The Heavy

Just in case you've dumped cash into any of the shows mentioned in other posts, let me remind you that today is FREE FUN Wednesday... yes!

I will provide easy linking to rsvp/list info to make this adventure painless and free:

synethsiapop newswire: The Swell Season scores amazing opening act #2 for Tour #2

The Swell Season has scored yet another plum opening artist on their touring bill. First, there was last Fall's tour that found Martha Wainwright opening for the duo at the Wiltern. Then, at Coachella this year, they followed up the National's set on the Outdoor Theatre with primetime evening slot that found them without any Main Stage competition.

Now, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová return to Los Angeles to take on the Greek Theatre in October. Their opening act?.... Iron and Wine! I swear, they've scored more than Once with their show openers. Top o' the billing to ya!

The Greek Theatre show is scheduled for October 4th, with tickets ranging between $37.50 and $50.

Ducat King is hosting a presale Wednesday, May 7, at 3 p.m. CST. Tickets for the presale are $45 to $50 and all tickets pre-sold are premium seats (Section A or Pit... essential). While you're anchored on the Ducat site, you might as well check out the Wolf Parade tickets, too.

Free sign-up required for presale purchase.
I am still amazed by the crazy Swelling buzz. Cheers.

My Bloody (mother-effing) Valentine... Here, in LA!

Even though My Bloody Valentine did not make it to this year’s Coachella, as widely anticipated, the band will make a post-festival appearance for its Los Angeles fans. Kevin Shields and co. will perform glorious shoegazing nightcaps at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

The shows will take place Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 and go on sale THIS Friday (omfg!), May 9th, at 10 a.m. Tickets are $48 each. General Admission.

putting the T-o-D-o in Troubadour

Wondering which post-Pixies indie show to attend? I'll suggest a few Troubadour options which are cheap fun and an easy walk home (if you live in west hollywood).

Tapes n Tapes - Thurs May 8th and Fri May 9th
T'n'T's released their second album last month on XL recordings. Let the touring begin.

The Duke Spirit - Sat May 10th
this one's gonna sell out!

If you feel like taking the west out of hollywood, you can always check out (yet another) uk buzzer in Air Traffic on Friday (May 9) as they open for Elbow at Avalon or on Saturday (May 10) when they slide into Spaceland

... just relaying information. happy bouncing.

It's May 5th, 2008 which means, as Spanish-speakers will tell you, it is also Cinco de Mayo. duh.

So... If you'd rather do something more productive than getting trashed on tequila shots, I suggest you rsvp to tonight's KCRW-sponsored Tales of the Colt 45 party at King King Hollywood (6553 hollywood blvd). The list closes early this afternoon, so hurry...

Vice and Tales of the Colt 45 Tour present:

Mo'achella Revisited: Amy MILLAN Tequila Watch! (Cinco de Mayo POLL of the DAY))

hooray... Monday is Poll Day!

For today's poll, let us revisit last month's SPIN-terview with Stars' Amy Millan.

Since the live at&t blue room webcast has already confirmed that the singer/guitarist took multiple swigs of tequila during her 5pm Main Stage show, the only question that remains is this:
Was Amy Millan's Video Interview with SPIN conducted pre- or post-Patron?
Watch (or fast-forward) till the end before you vote!  Good Luck!

Wednesday is FREE FUN Night: The HEAVY headlines Rock the Rabbit!

I know you've probably read the last post about the FREE 120 Days show at the Viper Room and are thinking, "How will I possibly make it to west hollywood if I'm already seeing The Heavy (for "Rock the Rabbit) at bordello that same evening?"

Well... I think it is not overly ambitious to book two rad shows in one evening (esp. if rad factor is v. high).

I propose the following itinerary:
  • 6pm eat.
  • 7pm drink.
  • 8pm go to Rad Show #1 (The Heavy plays "Rock the Rabbit").
  • 10pm leave for Rad Show #2 (120 Days plays "Vice/Scion party").
  • 10:30pm leave, if you haven't already left, for Rad Show #2.
  • Midnight plus-   sleep.
see you there.

Wednesday, May 7 -
Bordello
Rock the Rabbit presents...
THE HEAVY
... where acoustic guitars and age old samplers, coupled with the filthiest horns, guitar licks and disturbing lower frequencies dwell, in the heads of The Heavy. Picture Tom Waits fostering the Rza while John Bonham and The Parliaments host a gargage sale for Chester Burnett, Willie Mitchell and the Stooges........ The Heavy reak of lo fi samples and broken down beats, a disgusting but yet compelling delivery on all fronts and more stinky than anything that has ever come out of your back passage....King Louie (Biographer)
120 Days Play Post-Coachella Show at the Viper Room!
120 Days` gig at The Legion in London the 17th of May is recommended in NME this week. "No-one ever got laid by labelling their band "drone-rock", though Norway`s symphonic electro-atmosphericists might manage some heavy petting. With a sound located somewhere between Kraftwerk and Underworld, they make for an immersive listening experience" (NME)

Post-Coachella Show Update: 120 Days to play Viper Room this Wednesday... FREE!!!

One of the most depressing parts about skipping Coachella is missing out on live sets from acts like 120 Days

One of the best parts about living within 120 miles of Coachella is that rad electronic outfits from Europe and beyond will usually make their way to Los Angeles for a rare, surprise (and often, free!) post-festival show.

With that written, I present the RSVP link for Wednesday's (may 7th) Vice/Scion-sponsored show at the Viper Room. FREE! (...a price that never gets old) and featuring a full set by the aforementioned Norwegian neu-dudes. This party is strictly List Only. Show starts at 10pm. 21+ enforced. List closes 6pm Wednesday. Let's go!

If you missed them at Coachella, or during their tour opening for Ratatat (who subsequently opened for BJORK!), then, please acclimate yourself with the sleazy-synthesizey-ness of 120 Days.

I will help. Following is an item from the YouTube archives:

Official Metric New-Album Countdown Begins...

Fresh off its desert turn in Indio, Metric (yes!) is reportedly heading back to the studio to continue working on its follow up to 2005's Live it Out. Said reports make me sleeplessly excited.

In the interim, I will bide my time reliving last Fall's Metric/Crystal Castles tour (thru the help of YouTube, of course).

Spin Magazine is doing its part to help with the reliving. Its camera crew caught up with the band last weekend at Coachella as the four-piece described their forthcoming record and (officially) debuted a new track hopeful entitled, "Gimme Sympathy." Sounds like a new record is well on its way!!! Fine entertainment, kids.
from Spin.com:

Watch footage of the performance, as Shaw fingers through power-chords and Haines coos, "would you rather be the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?," then watch a video interview, in which the band describe their new album ("big and expansive and airy") and unique mindset going into the studio.

In a related (sorta) link, Spin also caught up with fellow Broken Social Scenester, Amy Millan (of Stars), following her band's Sunday debut at the desert fest. If you've never been to a Stars show, please do yourself a favor and visit your local concert ticket conglomerate to see the band, in all its lush and live glory, soon! Break-up and make-up songs never felt so good!

"Give Me Sympathy"

SPIN is Poolside at Coachella '08: Stars

SPIN Magazine gets chatty with Stars' Singer/guitarist Amy Millan (also of Broken Social Scene) as she dishes "on cover tunes, fellow Montreal acts, and plans to return to the studio."

new tom waits...

... covers by Scarlett Johansson (and co.) are pretty good. Great production. Good tunes. I'm enjoying my listen.

The Kills at the El Rey this month!

This month's music calendar is unreal!
Who's joining me for The Kills on May 21st?
