Avaland: Felix Da Housecat, Dan Berkson & James What, Reza

Felix da Housecat Birthday Bash!

Avalon hosts an end-of-August, Labor Day weekend bonanza. Since most of us aren't in school this just gives us another reason to party. It also happens to be Felix's Birthday Party so he'll definitely be up for it. If you've been here for Felix's last few shows I'm sure you'll agree with me that every show gets better and better. Playing on the main stage with Felix this week is DJ Reza from Saturday Night Sessions.

In addition to everything we have going on in the main room we also have a special night setup for Honey this week with Poker Flat Recording artists Dan Berkson and James What playing a live set in a small, intimate setting. Lee Foss and Clovis join them in Honey.

Get on the guestlist this week by texting 38714 with avaland830 then your full name and number of guests (example - avaland830 jane doe 2)

This Saturday is also Club 82 (w/Felix da Housecat, Keith 2.0, and more). All guests must RSVP to get on the VIP list for Honey Lounge and stage access wristbands. Enter through the Honey Lounge entrance located at the south side of the building. Doors open at 10PM and the first 100 people will get in for free; after that, it will only be $15. There will be an open bar in Honey Lounge from 10 until 10:30 so just come early. 82 is the new black!

8/30 Anthem Presents Whistling Past the Graveyard Hosted By Jason Lee

Join Anthem Magazine and WESC as we present Whistling Past the Graveyard featuring new works by Mercedes Helnwein, hosted by Jason Lee at the Merry Karnowski Gallery.

Helnwein's drawings have been described as "photo-realistic," "lucid fairy-tales," "strikingly bizarre," "haunting," "southern Gothic," "evocative" and "unexpected." Her self-portraits have been compared to Cindy Sherman and her sense of quiet drama to Alfred Hitchcock and Edgar Allen Poe.

Also included in the exhibition is a video projection, in which the formerly frozen characters jerk to life for the first time in thick saturated colors.

thank you, liz phair

Thank you, Liz Phair, for going back 15 yrs to revisit and re-release 1993's Exile in Guyville. You must realize that this record was a staple of my youth and a seminal album that I overplayed for every other adolescent music nerd friend I had at the time. Oh yeah... thanks for re-releasing this out-of-print album since my beat-up copy was lifted from my cd wall and "borrowed" four years ago. I know we live in the iPod and Amoeba Age, but still...

Watch Liz Phair (circa '95) perform one of my favorite jams from Exile in Guyville:

Today is Day Two of Osheaga 3.0: BSS, MGMT, CSS, as well as other initial-less bands.

New Bjork / Antony Hegarty Collaboration

YES!!! Bjork and Antony Hegarty collaboration to be released...

from the NME:
Bjork and Antony Hegarty have teamed up for a new single. The Antony & the Johnsons man sings on 'Dull Flame Of Desire', the latest single to be taken from the Icelandic singer's sixth studio album 'Volta', which was released in 2007. Released on September 29, the song includes lyrics taken from a translation of a poem by Fyodor Tyutchev. The pair played the song live together at Bjork's Hammersmith Apollo live shows in London last April.
In other NME/bjork news... China has probably deleted Bjork from its Friend List on Myspace after a recent Beijing concert appearance during which she declared support for a free Tibet. In response to her controversial 'outburst,' China has announced new (and heavy) restrictions planned for foreign performers in its country... just another example of a country's political leaders getting creative with its interpretations of past events.
