Broken Social Scene Fall Tour Presale is ON!

Here's the latest word from the Camp BSS
Do yourself a favor and see them live.
Then, do it again.
Rinse. Repeat.

For those who are hitting the festival circuit this summer, you're probably already aware that Broken Social Scene has been responsible for some of the summer's most joyous, exciting performances. If you haven't made it to these shows, now's your chance to see the band shine: Toronto's finest will be extending the Something For All Of Us Tour, which starts this August, into the Fall for performances across the U.S. Named after the newest album in the Broken Social Scene Presents series, Brendan Canning's amazing solo record – Something For All Of Us… (out now on Arts + Crafts), the tour will feature Broken Social Scene as a seven-piece including band staples Brendan Canning, Kevin Drew, Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Apostle of Hustle's Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg and Leon Kingstone.

Starting today, fans will be able to purchase tickets, before they go on sale to the general public, on the Arts & Crafts online store – Gallery AC. The pre sale will run until 5PM EST on Friday, August 1st. One lucky fan from each city will also win an exclusive, autographed silk-screened tour poster. Visit http://arts-crafts. ca/bssticketing to order tickets.

For the
Something For All Of Us Tour, Broken Social Scene will be performing songs from Brendan Canning's brilliant record, in addition to tracks from the 2007 release Kevin Drew's Spirit If… and tons of fan favorites from their incredible discography. The songs from Canning's album have quickly become integral to the Broken Social Scene live set, from the springboard bounce-pop of first single "Hit the Wall" to the disco-driven "Love is New."

Here's the official word from Liquified:
We regret to inform everyone that Sander Kleinenberg will not be making it to his Avaland Residency performance this Saturday July 19th due to issues related to his U.S. visa renewal. On behalf of Sander, Avalon and the rest of the Avaland team, we deeply regret any inconvenience this has caused. Please be assurred, we will definitely have Sander back at the Avalon in the near future.

Saturday will still be a terriffic event featuring the extremely gifted French DJ / Producer SEBASTIEN LEGER who is one of electronic music's most recent outstanding artists. Skirball Center Launches FREE Sunset Concert Series TONIGHT with TCHEKA

Join KCRW DJ Tom Schnabel as he introduces Cape Verdean singer/songwriter Manuel Lopes Andrade (aka Tcheka) as the inaugural artist for the Skirball Center's free Sunset Concert Series

The series begins tonight (July 17th) and runs through August 26th.

featuring a live performance by TCHEKA (listen)
Admission is FREE. No reservations will be taken.
Doors at 7pm. Limited seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Manuel Lopes Andradee, better known as Tcheka, is hailed for breathing new life into the music of his homeland Cape Verde, an island nation off the coast of West Africa. He is at the forefront of a cultural movement to transpose the percussive beats of batuque (rhythms traditionally played by women on Tcheka's home island of Santiago) to the strings of the guitar. Through memorable "narrative songs," Tcheka sings of life in Cape Verde—its people, landscape, and heritage—and reflects upon such universal themes as love, friendship, tragedy, hope, and joy.
Make sure to listen to KCRW (and check to Skirball website) for updates and information on upcoming shows.  Cheers!

Exhibition: Between Earth and Heaven
July 13, 2008-October 12, 2008

Between Earth and Heaven will be the first large-scale museum exhibition devoted to this innovative, yet underappreciated, American architect. Over the course of a career spent largely in Los Angeles, John Lautner (1911–1994) captured the essence of Southern California in more than 150 distinctive structures. Trained by Frank Lloyd Wright, Lautner is best known for such private homes as the Elrod Residence in Palm Springs, featured in the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever, and Los Angeles’s iconic “Chemosphere.” Organized by the Hammer Museum, Between Earth and Heaven is curated jointly by Nicholas Olsberg, a cultural historian and expert on modern American architecture, and Frank Escher, an award-winning architect who helped establish the John Lautner Foundation. A three-venue international tour is planned. The 234-page Rizzoli exhibition catalogue will be the first comprehensive study of Lautner and his work and will include many previously unpublished photographs and drawings.

TOP Ten CANADIAN... a new weekly series.

I've been inspired to create a new, original weekly series of Top Ten Canadian playlists which I deem fully editable at any time. In fact, I'm kicking off the TTC Series with my Top Ten Canadian Bands (at this very moment).

I must qualify the list with said parenthetic qualifier because there are so many amazing musicians, acts, side projects, collectives, supergroups, superconnected collectives that I simply cannot narrow my list down to ten without feeling horrible about the noteworthy omissions.

With that written, I give you my Top Ten Canadian Bands At This Very Moment (T.T.C.B.A.T.V.M.):

10. (tie) Plants and Animals (montreal) / Bell Orchestre (montreal)
9. (tie) Patrick Watson (montreal) & Holy F*ck (toronto) -- > this is cheating, i know... deal with it!
8. the Arts & Crafts solo artists & off-shoots (which can be a whole, separate list) including: kevin drew, brendan canning, amy millan, jason collett
7. Feist! (via vancouver) ... omitted from #8 because she's majorly major now
6. Stars (montreal) coming to LA and OC this October!
5. Wolf Parade (montreal)   playing back-to-back LA dates this fri & sat at the music box!
4. the New Pornographers (vancouver, b.c.) - west coast supergroup-ness
3. METRIC! (toronto) hell ya! please do yourselves a favor and Go See Them Live... now!
2. Arcade Fire (montreal) so moving
1. Broken Social Scene (toronto) soooo moving

continue reading the full post and playlist HERE.

TOP Ten CANADIAN... pt. 1
wow... what an amazing collection!
with the exception of patrick watson and brendan canning (the soloist), I think i've seen each band at least once in the past year or so.

one quick note: I am excluding emily haines (the soloist) from this group because i think of her work as solo work than band work... otherwise, it'd be top five, for sure!

Radio Free Silverlake returns Tuesday (July 15th) with Let's Independent! (ft. The Black Pine, The Black Kites, EXITMUSIC)

Radio Free Silverlake is back with its monthly indie pop rock music extravaganza: Let's Independent! The monthly showcase (at Boardner's in Hollywood) is celebration of local independent music and always brings together a fabulously festive (and aurally obsessed) group of people for a night of bells and amps on-tap.

Actually, I think RFS sums up the evening best by writing, "It's a goddamn party that celebrates just how fantastic the LA music scene is..."

word!
details...
Tuesday night is your first chance to see the sweetly dark pop act The Black Pine in over a year AND they're debuting new material from their upcoming album.

Combine that with shoegazey openers The Black Kites and EXITMUSIC and you've a strong contender for the best show in town.

Read all the details and hear exclusive MP3s right here
Boardner's is located at 1652 North Cherokee Ave ... a half block south of Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood ... a scenic spot that has been around since the 40s, can be seen such films as Ed Wood, Wag the Dog, LA Confidential, and Leaving Las Vegas, and -- really, I would not kid with you about this -- Guns N Roses trashed the bathroom once. (It' s like, history, you're soaking in it or something.)
----------------------
btw... a sidenote.

Am I the only one that's noticed the great number of amazing bands with the prefix "The Black ...?" -->  we have the Black Keys, the Black Ghosts, the Black Heart Procession, the Black Angels, the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, even the Black Crowes

I'm sure I'm missing some amazing Black <...> bands, but you get the point.

sidenote numero dos...
i just recently joined the most fashionable (literally) social network on the web. It's called LOOKBOOK and it's an invite-only community of tastemakers and buzzfinders from across the chromatic spectrum. check it out HERE (or click on the rad lookbook widget on the left column) and make sure to add lookbook.nu as your friend on myspace

lookbook.nu is...

that is all ;)

Belly Up w/the Duke Spirit... way UP!... Also, Hit the Racetrack w/Gnarls Barkley, Gavin Rossdale and more!

This post is a shoutout to a dear (and fellow indie rock-obsessed) friend that has just packed the bags and moved to the most baja part of california. It's a v. good thing san diego is very much on the touring radar... and cheaper (six bucks to see the duke spirit play belly up), too!

FM 94.9’s About the Music Show for July.
Belly Up Tavern (143 S. Cedros Ave, Solana Beach, CA)
The Duke Spirit have received much acclaim and increasing success despite relatively little advertising based promotion on TV and the radio.
check it out!

In related san diego-and-environs news, the Del Mar Racetrack has also teamed up with the Belly Up Tavern to present a number of noteworthy shows, including Gnarls Barkley, Gavin Rossdale, Black Francis (aka Frank Black of the PIXIES). Perhaps I should schedule a visit to Southernmost Cal...?

Happy Bastille Day from LA!

We still have three hours to celebrate France! Come on over for a MAD Mondays Soiree in honor of Bastille Day. Join your fellow Francophiles at the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood if you are Sunset Blvd-adj.

Speaking of... there will be a dj, and drinks, and good people and nice patios. Festive times, folks.
tres bien.

Here's the official word the C-TOWN:

Today is Le Fete National (Bastille Day) which just happens to fall on our scheduled Mad Mondays night. I have heard the French use this opportunity to ditch work and celebrate intensely throughout the day, so we are prepared for some additional ruckus to the already rad vibe of Mad Mondays. Posso the DJ is our special guest DJs, Free Siku Vodka, and sweet French Make-overs. Expect tons of frogs in full effect tonight swinging to our tunes, shouting obscenities in French, and plenty of 90's house music.

... see you with bells on tonight!
