The Drop on kcrw was on fire tonight...

the tunes were sick... so good.
as soon as tonight's show is archived, I will post and you will listen ;)

this is last week's show (not tonight's), which includes, among many others, one of my favorite SONIC YOUTH jams, "hits of sunshine," from a thousand leaves.   yes, please.

oh - speaking of sonic youth... they have announced that the "rampant speculation" and rumors are true: SY's forthcoming album will be released "sometime in 2009" by MATADOR Records. Hell ya! ... Seems like a perfect union, to me.

New STREETS album streaming on MySpace... makes me v. happy

Sweet.

Win Tickets to see MGMT with Beck (if they make it)

via the band's MySpace page:
Enter HERE to win a pair of tickets to see MGMT with Beck this fall

Of course, yesterday the band also posted a blog announcing a possible tour-ending injury to its drummer (aka 50% of MGMT) which would wipe out next week's LA shows at the Fonda and Hollywood Bowl... And it would give me two less reasons to live. Fingers crossed for a speedy healing (or heel-ing... see pic ;)

here's the band's blog post:

Tragedy strikes!! "Breaking" News
Oh Fuck! MGMT Drummer Will Berman's Heel is seriously f'd.
Check it out:::

According to Will, he injured it when "jumping from the curb to the street," says Will.

Sadly, Tomorrow's SoCo Music Experience show is cancelled. Sorry! Pray for Will's health and that the x-rays don't show any fractures, otherwise it's goodbye MGMT forever. The Heel bone, scientifically connected to the leg bone, is a very difficult bone break to mend. A heel is like a wheel, they say.

if YOU bend it,
YOU CAN"T MEND IT.

Also, contrary to another internet rumor, though they be rad dudes, the Chemical Brothers will not be producing MGMT's next album.

despite playing with a trained speed flying falcon, it is a very sad day.

Also on the wednesday calendar (from SCION) is a screening of Heavy Metal in Baghdad at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills.

A reception will follow the screening and RSVP is required.

FILM SYNOPSIS

Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a feature film documentary that follows the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day. Playing heavy metal in a Muslim country has always been a difficult (if not impossible) proposition but after Saddam's regime was toppled, there was a brief moment for the band in which real freedom seemed possible. That hope was quickly dashed as their country fell into a bloody insurgency. From 2003-2006, Iraq disintegrated around them while Acrassicauda struggled to stay together and stay alive, always refusing to let their heavy metal dreams die. Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis.

Be part of its contemporary sequel, as our photographers document your very own street style with images uploaded to the Web.

Enjoy music, special screenings of independent films, and curator-and educator-led tours of modern art from the permanent collection and special exhibitions Philip-Lorca diCorcia and The Age of Imagination: Japanese Art, 1615–1868, from the Price Collection.

Aquarium Drunkard, Owl Sounds and Sonic Living present POP LEVI & Le Switch (Tonight... FREE!)

Here's the word from the AD peeps:

Our monthly Thursday night Rumble is back this week with Pop Levi and Le Switch on the bill. Pop Levi (whose 2007 album, The Return to Form Black Magick Party, was T. Rex great) has a new LP in the can, so this is an increasingly rare opportunity to see his band in a truly intimate room. Speaking of the room, for those of you who are here in L.A and haven’t yet checked out 3 of Clubs (on Vine and Santa Monica), it is a low-lit, old school, bar…and note that there is not a sign out front. I’ve come to believe it might very well host the best jukebox in town. High praise.
The night is free for those who RSVP .
If you don’t RSVP there is a $5 cover at the door if the room is not over capacity. Free Firestone beer from 8:30-9:30 if you RSVP.
