Maria Taylor, Nik Frietas and Johnathan Rice Headline Echoplex Benefit Show

Tonight's triple-bill at the echoplex has evolved into a benefit show to help Maria and her band mates replace the music gear stolen from their van this week. Along with Maria Taylor will be indie-folk songwriters Nik Frietas and Johnathan Rice.

from Brooklyn Vegan:
Yesterday in San Francisco Maria Taylor's van was broken into. Maria and the band are pretty devastated as the culprits got away with 6 guitars, 2 suitcases, pedals, and plenty of merch. We're hoping some of these items may turn up online or in local San Francisco pawn shops. As you can imagine, this gear has lots of sentimental value as well. If anyone has any information, please have them send a message to info AT saddle-creek DOT com.
Maria has two more shows left with Johnathan Rice and Nik Frietas. They'll be playing with borrowed gear, but the shows will go on!

Fri-Jul-11, Los Angeles, CA, Echoplex
Sat-Jul-12, Sonoma, CA, Gundlach Bundschu Winery

Tickets are still available via TicketWeb (and at the door). Doors at 7:30pm. Come out for a great show and support our local LA musicians!

Thanks so much for your support
.

Tonight (Fri 7/11) at Spaceland: The Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr.

Indie 103.1 fm Presents...
Albert Hammond Jr. (w/Secret Society of the Sonic Six and The Parlour Mob)
at Spaceland (1717 Silverlake Blvd, LA, CA)
General Admission.  Limited Tickets Available at the Door. 21+
By all published accounts, the Strokes haven't even begun to work on their fourth album, but devout fans are offered one hell of a conciliation prize: Albert Hammond Jr.'s solo material. And "GfC," a tune off his forthcoming sophomore set ¿Cómo Te Llama?, out July 8, will certainly ease the potentially long wait. With unadorned, meat and potatoes instrumentation, "GfC" opens with starry guitar twinkles, which segue into pop-smart slashes and hip-shaking bass, and soon, an all out chorus in which Hammond Jr. stretches his vocals like never before. A sliding mess of Beatles "White Album"-like guitars seal the deal.

The Independent offering FREE Compilation CD (w/One Little Indian Records)

You still have a few days to snag your FREE digital download indie pop rock compilation from UK newspaper The Independent.

The Independent worked with One Little Indian Records to compile a magnificent (and free!) cd that is available via its website, for streaming and download, for a limited time only. Satisfy your aural fixation today!

To celebrate our love of music, the ethos of being independent and Independents Day 08, One Little Indian - the home of Björk, Alabama 3 and countless other independent artists - want to share with you the reasons why we value our independence and our artists so much.

We have a specially assembled, free 10-track collection of their new singles, some of which have yet to be released.

On the compilation we have Canadian noiseniks Land of Talk (a personal fave), New York troubadour Jesse Malin, hotly tipped Northampton indie band The All New Adventures of Us and one of our favourite singer-songwriters, Michigan’s Chris Bathgate, as well as tracks from HK119, Matthew Ryan, Stalkers, Shelleyan Orphan, Rose Kemp and Underground Railroad.

For seven days (beginning July 3rd), listen live to the exclusive FREE Independents Day tracks courtesy of One Little Indian by clicking here!

Also, make sure to catch the link to the Independent's "Ones to Watch" feature on one of my favorite live acts 0f the past 2007/08: Holy F*ck! ... and do yourself a huge favor and SEE them live!

Happy Listening ;)

HAMMER Music: Thursday's Free Music (and more) Pick!

Rock returns to the Hammer Courtyard this July for a series of free concerts hand-picked by popular local independent radio tastemaker, Indie 103.1 fm. Each of the four nights feature back-to-back sets by some of the best and most buzzed-about bands. Galleries open until 9pm and refreshments are available in the courtyard.

Last week kicked off the Hammer Music series with Nico Vega and the Growlers. This week we're treated to rising indie rock stars,
The Deadly Syndrome (their "last show in awhile," as seen above). The local Angelenos have continued their quick ascent following last year's monthly residencies at Spaceland which culminated in signing with Steve Aoki's trendsetting independent music label DIM MAK records. Catch The Deadly Syndrome (w/Miss Derringer) perform the Hammer Courtyard tonight for FREE:
The Deadly Syndrome & Miss Derringer
“... unbridled euphoria — and wry touches such as onstage cutouts of ghosts helped LA band The Deadly Syndrome go from zero to signed in a few short months. Well, that and explosive, unaffected songs right out of the Arcade Fire/Modest Mouse/Wolf Parade playbook.” —The Los Angeles Times

Heavily influenced by American music of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, particularly the vintage sounds of outlaw country performers such as Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash or the girl group pop of the Ronettes and Shangri Las. Miss Derringer, an LA band, also finds inspiration in the music and attitude of early punk bands like the Misfits and Black Flag.
The Hammer Music series will continue next Thursday (July 17 @ 8pm) with fuzz-maestros, The Duke Spirit (a must see!) and the experimental electronic collective, Io Echo. The summer music series will wrap the following Thursday (July 24 @ 8pm) with north-of-the-border Indie sensations Toyko Police Club and the UK's indie pop outfit,  the Afternoons.

Also, look out for the Hammer's sister series, JazzPOP, which also returns for three consecutive Thursdays this summer. Per the Hammer's press release, the JazzPOP evenings include "three different takes on the jazz sextet/septet that draw inspiration from prog rock, Motown, free jazz, psychedelic pop, and folksy Americana. Organized by San Francisco bassist and independent curator Lisa Mezzacappa. Galleries open until 9pm. Seating for JazzPOP is first come, first served. Members receive priority seating, subject to availability."

All Hammer public programs are free and reservations will not be accepted.
Programs in the Hammer Courtyard do not require tickets.
The first 1000 people to arrive will enjoy the evening festivities.
Admission for is granted on a first come, first served basis.
